The Golf R’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The AMG C-Class Sedan doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Golf R’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the AMG C-Class Sedan.

Both the Golf R and the AMG C-Class Sedan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Golf R’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the AMG C-Class Sedan’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Volkswagen pays for scheduled maintenance on the Golf R for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volkswagen will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the AMG C-Class Sedan.

There are over 64 percent more Volkswagen dealers than there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Golf R’s warranty.

The Volkswagen Golf R’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the AMG C-Class Sedan’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

The Golf R’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the AMG C-Class Sedan’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Golf R has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the AMG C-Class Sedan.

The Golf R has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the AMG C-Class Sedan; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some tire options on the AMG C-Class Sedan don’t have a run-flat feature, either.

For better maneuverability, the Golf R’s turning circle is 1.2 feet tighter than the AMG C 43’s (38.1 feet vs. 39.3 feet). The Golf R’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the AMG C 63 S E’s (38.1 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

The Volkswagen Golf R may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1300 pounds less than the Mercedes AMG C-Class Sedan.

The Golf R is 1 foot, 7.5 inches shorter than the AMG C-Class Sedan, making the Golf R easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Golf R is quieter than the AMG C 63 S E (76 vs. 78 dB).

The Golf R’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The AMG C-Class Sedan does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Golf R has a standard rear wiper. The AMG C-Class Sedan doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Both the Golf R and the AMG C-Class Sedan have standard heated front seats. The Golf R also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the AMG C-Class Sedan.

The Golf R has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the AMG C-Class Sedan.
